SUMMARY:Yiddish Silent Film with Live Improvised Piano
DESCRIPTION:Har Zion has an exciting opportunity coming up—the screening of a 1923 silent film with bilingual captions—Yiddish and English—starring the incomparable actress Molly Picon, accompanied, as it should be, with live, improvised piano music by pianist and composer Dr. Larry Schanker!\nWe will enjoy dessert before the screening.\nThe Actor: Molly Picon\nMolly in the TV program “Car 54, Where are you?” in 1962\nMolly Picon was born in 1898 and died in 1992. Her acting career—which spanned 70 years (!)—began as a child in vaudeville, in 1904. After silent films, she went on to act in both Yiddish and English films and theater. Outside of Yiddish entertainment, she was best known for playing Yente the Matchmaker in the 1971 musical Fiddler on the Roof.  You can learn more about her at the Jewish Women’s Archive ( https://jwa.org/womenofvalor/picon ).\nThe Film: East and West\nThe film being shown is the 1923 silent East and West. ( https://moviessilently.com/2015/01/25/east-west-1923-silent-film-review/ ) It is the oldest surviving Yiddish language film and Molly Picon’s earliest recorded performance. The website Movies Silently ( https://moviessilently.com/2015/01/25/east-west-1923-silent-film-review/ ) has an interesting discussion and synopsis of the film. East and West “features classic scenes of young Molly Picon who lifts weights, boxes, teaches young Yeshiva ‘bochers’ to shimmy and steals away from Yom Kippur prayers to gorge herself!” (Jewish Film Institute, https://jfi.org/programs/jfi-film-archive/east-and-west ( https://jfi.org/programs/jfi-film-archive/east-and-west ))\nThe Musician: Pianist, Composer, and Piano Improviser Extraordinaire Dr. Larry Schanker\nDr. Larry Schanker\nAnd pianist Dr. Larry Schanker will provide live, improvised music for to accompany the film.\nAs a composer, Larry has received multiple Joseph Jefferson Award nominations for his work with the Practical Theatre Company and the Goodman Theatre, where he composed and performed live music for A Christmas Carol for 15 years. He earned a PhD in music composition from the University of Chicago and currently serves as Executive Director and Music Specialist at Brookview Montessori School ( xhttps://www.brookviewschool.org/larryschanker.asp ) in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Widely recognized throughout the Midwest for his improvised silent film scores, Larry most recently accompanied an evening of Buster Keaton films at Studio 5 in Evanston.\nDetails to come.\n
