Erev Purim Music, Spiel, and Megillah Reading

Erev Purim Music, Spiel, and Megillah Reading

As anyone who has participated in Har Zion’s annual Purim Carnival (this year the carnival is on Sunday, March 1) knows that Purim is a fun holiday. The Purim Spiel (the Yiddish word for “play”; see “What’s a Purim Spiel?” below for more) has been part of the Purim tradition since the 15th century, and, this year, Har Zion is bringing it (back) as part of our Har Zion Purim tradition.

We are pesenting a Beatles-themed Purim Spiel, complete with parodies of Beatles’ songs) to be “performed” by Har Zion grownups during the Megillah reading on Erev Purim. This adult Purim spiel would be on Monday evening, March 2nd, starting at about 6:30 PM. (Preceded at 6pm by a Purim Pizza Party.)

Reservations are not needed to attend the Purim Spiel and Megillah Reading. (They are required if you want to attend the Purim Pizza Party that precedes it.)

Please let Har Zion’s Director of Education David Schwartz know if you’d like to help out with the spiel (or any other contribution to the Purim festivities)!

What’s a Purim Spiel?

Purim spiel is a “specific humorous skit or play using themes or base storyline of the book of Esther in honor of the holiday of Purim, but often including jokes or settings relevant to the local community or current events” (from the Jewish English Lexicon website, quoting the book by Sol Steinmetz, Dictionary of Jewish Usage).
