“Haimish”—Homelike—Shabbat Kiddush
There is a special haimish (warm, cozy, homelike) kiddush today, featuring cholent stew. Cholent is a staple food for Shabbat lunch in many observant Ashkenazi Jewish homes.
Cholent is “a hearty stew that simmers overnight in a pre-lit oven or slow cooker without transgressing the prohibition against cooking on the Sabbath.” This is from “Deconstructing Cholent,” an article as written by Leah Koenig for Forward magazine. It includes Leah’s recipe for vegetarian cholent; click here. (Our cholent will be vegetarian.)
So come to services today and stay to enjoy this special kiddush afterward.
