Shemini Atzeret
In 5787 in the Diaspora, Shemini Atzeret begins at sundown of Friday, October 2. It follows the seventh (and last day) of the harvest holiday Sukkot. In Hebrew, Shemini Atzeret means the “eighth [day] of assembly.”
When Shemini Atzeret falls on a weekday or Sunday, the minyan is replaced by a festival service that begins at 10am. When it is on a Saturday, as it is in 2026/5787, the Shemini Atzeret service is observed as part of the Shabbat Morning service.
Shemini Atzeret is one of four times a year when Yizkor, the Jewish memorial service, is recited.

Harvest Kiddush and Lunch and Learn on Shemini Atzeret • 22 Tishrei 5787:
- Stay after services on Saturday morning, October 3, for kiddush lunch and enjoy the last fruits of our Beyond Hunger Garden. Our garden, located under the Gropper Windows, has fed the hungry all season with wide varieties of greens (leaf, mustard, tatsoi), and peas, beans, peppers, asparagus, and tomatoes.
