In April, Rabbi Glick’s Topic is: Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach – A Modern Hassidic Master.
Dear Friends,
We have studied the foundational spiritual concepts of Kabbalah’s teachings and practices, from Temple and prophetic times, to the mysticism of the early rabbis, medieval Kabbalah and the Zohar, to the Ari’s Tzfat renaissance and the focus on Repair/ Tikkun, to the heart-felt ecstasy of the Hassidim. We now turn to see how these ancient ideas have expressed themselves in our present day by looking at key modern Jewish figures in Jewish spirituality, including Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, and Rabbi Arthur Green.
Rabbi Carlebach or Reb Shlomo told extraordinary stories that moved hearts. He brought a generation of Jews, especially in the 60’s and 70’s back to Judaism with a spiritual, ecstatic, and deeply compassionate view of humanity and Yiddishkeit. His music continues to inspire synagogues around the world. Once described as the Pied Piper of Judaism, we will hear his stories and study his Torah. Despite the serious concerns that have arisen in recent years about his behavior, Reb Shlomo was one of the giants of 20th century Judaism.
