About Sukkot

The week-long harvest festival of Sukkot commemorates the dwelling of the Israelites in tents during their 40-year journey in the Sinai desert.  It is customary to construct a sukkah—a covered and decorated open air “tent” for Sukkot. We eat meals and sleep in the sukkah, and shake the etrog—a type of citrus—and lulav—a palm frond bound with myrtle and willow branches.

Har Zion preschool children traditionally decorate the Lieb Family Sukkah with schach, fruits, and handmade decorations every year.

As all Har Zion services, Sukkot services are livestreamed on Facebook, YouTube, and Zoom, using the Har Zion Zoom password. (Links below.)

The First Two Days of Sukkot are Special

There are holiday services at 10am on the first two days of Sukkot. These services are in person and streamed on YouTube, Facebook, and Zoom, and use same the Zoom ID and siddur as the Shabbat morning services.

When these holidays fall on a weekday or Sunday, the 10am Sukkot service replaces the Shohet Daily Minyan service. When the holiday falls on a Saturday, the observance is included in the Shabbat morning service.

The first two days of Sukkot are yom tov, days when Jews are forbidden to work. The temple office is closed, and the temple building is also closed except for during services.
