Sunday Matinee — Holding Liat

Sunday Matinee is a series of Jewish-related movies, shown at Har Zion on selected Sundays at 2pm.

The first movie, Holding Liat, is Sunday, October 18, at 2pm. This is award-winning documentary is the story of her family’s search for Liat Beinin Atzili after she was kidnapped on October 7. Watch the trailer on the producer’s website. The website also describes the film:

In the weeks unfolding after Liat is kidnapped, her father resists efforts to use her captivity to justify escalating violence in Gaza, exposing political and emotional rifts within his family as they struggle to find a way to bring her home.

November 22, 2026: Four Winters: A Story of Jewish Partisan Resistance and Bravery in WWII (2022)
This documentary tells the story of over 25,000 Jewish partisans who fought the.Nazis from deep within the forests of Eastern Europe.

December 20: Harmonia (2016)
A contemporary variation of the biblical story of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar. Set in the Jerusalem Philharmonic Orchestra, with Sarah the harpist married to Abraham, its conductor. When Hagar, a young Palestinian horn player, joins the orchestra, the thin balance in their family is shaken. (In Hebrew with English subtitles.)

February 28, 2027: Hamentashen with Radish Filling

March 21: SHTTL (2022)
A Ukrainian-French film depicting the lives in a Jewish shtetl on the eve of the Nazi invasion, Operation Barbarossa. Filmed in Ukraine six months before the 2022 Russian invasion.

April 18: Unzere Kinder (1948)
Binem Heiler helped write the 1946 script for Uzere Kinder (Our Children), which is recognized as one of the first films made about the Holocaust.

May 16: In Search of Israeli Cuisine (2016)
James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov provides a portrait of the Israeli people told through food. It puts a literal face on the culture of Israel.
