Music Week at Har Zion Continues!

We are offering two short concerts at Har Zion during the third week of August:

• Wednesday, August 19, 6pm: Music of the Romantic Era
• Sunday, August 23, 4pm: Music of the Baroque Era (below)

Music of the Baroque Era

On Sunday, August 23, at 4pm, come to Har Zion for the second concert in Har Zion Music week: Baroque Music on Harpsichord and Bassoon. This concerts features three talented musicians from Har Zion: Reuben Karp and Charles Shapera on the bassoon, and Leah Miller on the harpsichord.

Koven Religious School student Reuben Karp

Reuben Karp on Bassoon

Reuben will be a sophomore at OPRF this year. He is a bassoonist with the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra- Symphony Orchestra. Reuben also plays euphonium in the OPRF Wind Ensemble and with the OPRF Marching Huskies. Reuben volunteers with PING! Partners in Oak Park mentoring elementary school students by providing weekly euphonium lessons to retain and advance their skills during summer break. After his recent bar mitzvah at Har Zion, Reuben has volunteered several times to read Torah in Saturday morning Shabbat services.

Leah Miller on Harpsichord

Lelan (Hebrew name Leah) Miller is originally from Urbana, Illinois where she studied piano with the late Lester Van Tress and Clara Rolland. After relocating to Oak Park in 2019, she studied pipe organ with Steve Wente at Concordia University and Zach Zwahlen at Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park in addition to harpsichord with Jason Moy at DePaul University.

She currently is a Blind Rehabilitation Specialist at the VA medical center in Maywood and provides music liturgy on piano and organ in the main chapel and in the assisted living care community on the VA campus.

Man of Many Hats at Har Zion, Charles Shapera

Charles Shapera on Basson

Charles Shapera is a longtime member of Temple Har Zion, having been a student in Koven Religious School, our Torah reader, a Hebrew school teacher, youth group director. He now also serves as executive director at Har Zion.

An accomplished musician, Charles performs on the bassoon in the United States and internationally, as a member of several orchestras and chamber ensembles. Charles taught Instrumental Music (Band) for 20 years before becoming the executive director of Temple Har Zion. He maintains a private music studio teaching all the wind instruments and piano.
